High Wycombe Garden Share Scheme (Baregardens)
Back

The aim of Baregardens is to put two groups of people in touch with each other:

  • Those who wish to grow food but do not have anywhere to do it...and those who have a garden which for one reason or another they are unable to cultivate.

  • The basis of the scheme is that those who 'lend' garden space are given, in return, half the produce grown on that space.

  • If the owner of the land becomes motivated to grow their own stuff after seeing it done, they can take back their land and do so; at the end of the season the person who is growing the stuff can move on to somewhere else.

  • No money changes hands, but the idea of the group is to help spread the ideas and practice of sustainable, organic, cheap and local food production.

  • If there is less garden space available than there are people who want it, a group of six or more people on the local electoral register have the right to ask the Council, in writing, for more land to be provided for allotments. There is a statutory obligation on the Council to consider this application. There are already long waiting lists for allotments in the High Wycombe area. But once we know about each other, we can act together.

  • At a time when so much food is shipped round the world using ever more expensive oil, acting locally saves money, and helps the environment.

  • At a time when we are all concerned about what chemicals are in or on our food, growing it ourselves puts the control back in our hands.

Baregardens would like to help local people to help themselves, and each other. Alone we are not very strong, together we can do great things!
